Driving your Interview – What does it mean?

Trying to drive your interview is a big lie!

Recently, a student messed up an interview at one of his dream firms. When probed, he said ‘I kept trying to drive the interview towards my stronger points by linking every answer to areas of my competence’. A tacit statement followed, which was ‘In the process of doing that, I ended up messing up my current answers’

A lot of entry-level graduates keep doing that repeatedly. An interviewer can always figure out if you try to conspicuously ‘drive’ your interview. Once he does that, he might never touch the matter.

Secondly, driving an interview to a place not relevant for the job doesn’t help. A Ph.D. in medicine will not help in cracking that Investment Banking Interview.

A smarter strategy would be to deep dive into the current profile, understand the JD and spend some time building your expertise in those requirements.

Additionally, focus on the ‘question in hand’ and answer it in an optimum way than trying to keep linking your answers (sometimes irrelevantly) to your areas of expertise.

Keep working smart!
